They that go down to the sea in ships: Guildford Chamber Choir

  • High Street Guildford, England, GU1 3RR United Kingdom (map)

Guildford Chamber Choir invites you to a memorable evening of music inspired by the sea, its beauty, mystery, power and enduring hold on the imagination. Under the direction of Principal Conductor Tristan Weymes, the programme journeys through a rich variety of musical responses to the maritime world.

The concert opens with B. Ponniah's They that go down to the sea in ships, commissioned for St Mary's Merton and Tristan Weymes, and continues with Grieg's serene Ave Maris Stella. Choral works by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, Sea Driftand The Lee Shore, sit alongside Bob Chilcott's evocative Sun, Moon, Sea and Stars. The choir is joined by a string ensemble for atmospheric instrumental interludes, including Delius's Two Aquarelles.

The evening concludes with Haydn's magnificent Nelson Mass (Missa in Angustiis), a masterpiece of dramatic power and thrilling choral writing, performed with soloists, strings, organ, trumpets and timpani.
